On a tip from his law partner ten years ago, Arkansas attorney Hayes McClerkin Jr. purchased an 1867 Washington College diploma. Robert E. Lee's signature was what appealed to the 1953 graduate of Washington and Lee University, but as he learned more about his find, it became that much more valuable to him. Full Story

Washington and Lee senior Avery F. Gholston is the recipient of the 2002 Isabel Hanford Olmstead Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation Scholarship. This $2,150 award is given in recognition of her high academic achievement and her fraternity and community involvement. Gholston, of Bloomfield Village, Mich., is a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta chapter at W&L. Theta, founded in 1870, is the first Greek-letter fraternity among women with a membership totaling more than 191,000 women internationally. Full Story

W&L’s Alsos Web Site Receives Second NSF Grant
Two faculty members at Washington and Lee University and a member of Virginia Military Institute’s staff have received a $300,000 grant from the National Science Foundation’s National Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education Digital Library (NSDL) program to continue work on the Alsos Digital Library for Nuclear Issues Web site (alsos.wlu.edu). W&L faculty members Dr. Frank Settle, professor of chemistry, and Dr. Thomas P. Whaley, professor of computer science, along with Dr. Elizabeth Blackmer, senior editor of the Alsos Web site and a staff member at VMI’s writing center, launched the Web site in 2002. Full Story
